Each grade of API 5L steel covers two product specification levels: PSL1 and PSL2. API 5L PSL2 steel higher specification level. There are various grades of API 5L PSL2 steel and each grade has its own sets of hardness, properties, tensile strength and yield strength. Various grades of API 5L PSL2 steel are used in different atmospheres, depending upon diverse factors such as climatically conditions, pressure and temperature.

The main delivery conditions of API 5L PSL2 steel are:
R - as rolled, which means the delivery condition without any special rolling and/or heat treatment.
N - normalizing rolled, normalizing formed, normalized, or normalized and tempered
Q - quenched and tempered
M - thermomechanical rolled or thermomechanical formed
API 5L PSL2 steel is usually used to produce pipeline steel pipes for use in transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
