East Tennessee conservationists say the monument marks the birthplace of Admiral David Farragut should be sent home long ago.
The property owner had removed the monument, said it is being stored safely, possibly in Texas, pending negotiations on where to reside permanently. But Charlie Faulkner, now retired from the University of Tennessee Department of Anthropology, said Texas would be an inappropriate place for it.
"It should not be in Texas. It would be like having a monument to the Alamo here in Knoxville," said Faulkner.
Faulkner conducted an archaeological survey of the property in 2008 where he sat on the monument of 111 years and concluded that "no doubt" that the monument was originally placed in the true birthplace of Farragut.
Bonny Kate Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution monument installed in 1900 in what is now the property Lylan Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald had taken the score earlier this year, claiming that the search and memorial encourages criminal activity on their property.
"Of course it (the monument) becomes privately owned, which is unfortunate," said Faulkner. "Every time a historic event takes place on a property that is privately owned, there is always a chance something might happen to him."
