Halal Roast Duck

SINGAPORE: For the first time, a local poultry company HKH Roast House has been granted licence to supply halal roast ducks in Singapore.

Halal means permissible in Arabic.

Halal ducks have to be slaughtered according to Islamic specifications, so that Muslims can consume them.

Each duck costs between S$24 and S$28 about the same price as other ducks in the market.

The halal roast ducks have been made available for a month and since then, five hotels have placed regular orders for them. They include Fullerton Hotel, Shangrila Hotel and Regent Hotel.

The company behind the halal roast ducks has invested about S$100,000 on its latest product and hopes to see a 20 percent increase in sales over the next three years.

Joseph Heng, marketing director, HKH Roast House, said: "The government encourages us to open to the Middle East market, and nowadays we find that a lot of Middle East nationals come to Singapore. Moreover, the new generation of Muslims are willing to acquire a new taste."
