Fuel, Lubricants and high-octane additives

In addition to isobutene, propylene and butenes are also used as olefins in the alkylation process to produce C7 and C8 hydrocarbons. When alkylated by isobutylene, isobutene produces isooctane (engine fuel standard). Methyl tributyl ether (MTBE) is a modern high-octane gasoline additive which reduces exhaust gas toxicity and is used in compounding motor gasolines.
