Hydroxyethy cellulose (HEC) is a nonionic water-soluble polymer derived form cellulose it is a cellulose ether ,but it differs in that it is nonionic and its solution are unaffected by cations . HEC dissolves readily in cold or hot water .Its solution have somewhat different flow properties from those obtained with other water soluble polymers .It is used to produce solutions having a wide range of viscosity .Such solutions are pseudoplastic that is ,they vary in viscosity depending on the amount of shear stress applied .
