Tamarillo (Tree Tomato)

Delicious Tamarillo from Ecuador!

Tamarillo is oval shaped. The color is variable; anywhere from red toorange to purple and even yellow. The pulp is orangish or reddish andjuicy. The flavor is somewhat sweet and sour and you will find smallseeds concentrated in the middle of the fruit. Each fruit measures from7 to 12 cm in length and 4 to 6 cm in width. Its texture is firm, skinsmooth and shiny.

Tamarillo can be eaten raw, peeled and cut into small pieces. It mayalso be cut in half and the pulp scooped out and eaten from eachsection with a spoon. Salt or sugar may be sprinkled, depending uponindividual preference.

Besides being eaten raw, tamarillo can be used in juices, salads, pastries and jams, as well as in sauces for meat dishes.
