32 years ago Shelmed Cottage Treasures opened its doors to
the world. From a company of 5 people it has come a long
way. Shelmed now distributes its products to more than 28
countries. It has 60 full time employees and over 120 in-
house artisans in its employ. It also has a production support base of over 2500 families. It works with the various commu-
nities in the area and has established production centers for
fabric and basket weaving. Production is maintained in a
factory in Albay, 500 kilometers south of the city of Manila
with the highest standards of quality control.
The company believes that innovation is the key to
staying relevant in the world market. Thus it continues
to research and create functional items for the world. It
aims to upgrade its product offerings by combining abaca
with non-traditional materials such as wire, terracotta, tin,
paper, glass and leather.
Shelmed Cottage Treasures is primarily an Abaca
company. Its strength lies in its familiarity and
technical knowledge of the many processes involved
in abaca production. It processes the abaca fiber into
woven materials, knotting and weaving them on
handlooms. It also presents the abaca fiber in twisted
or braided or crocheted form to enable the many
countries of the world to appreciate the end product
that could be a mat or matting or a houseware product.
