PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CONSTANTS OF THE CARDAMOM OIL:-
The seed and its essential oil are extensively used in traditional medicines. They are prescribed for the treatment of indigestion as stimulant, stomachic, astringent, vomiting, biliousness, abdominal pain and rectal diseases. It is known for its characteristic aroma, resembling that of the small cardamom and is used extensively in food flavouring such as confectionery bevetages, liquor, native, medicine and mouth freshener etc.
USES:-
The essential oil can be obtained by distillation from seeds, pericarp husk of the fruits and leaf of the plant on large scale. Although the large cardamom is not highly value for its essential oil as the small cardamom. The oil can also be considered as a natural source for solution of 1, 8- cineole.
Thr large cardamom belongs to the family Zingiberaceae and is also known by the names like Greater India cardamom or Nepal cardamom. It is native to the Eastern Himalayan region. The crop is cultivated on commercial scale in Sikkim. Darjeeling and the Assam hills. There is also production of large cardamom from other countries of world such as Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Indonesia and Laos. The African cardamoms of Aframomum species is a large robust perennial plant that grows in Central and West African countries. The seeds oil of this plant (3 mm dia, oval and shiny) are used for flavouring the traditional dishes and essential oil is used in perfumery, flavourings and dye preparations. Large cardamom is one of the major spices grown in India.
