The quintessential function of pharmaceutical primary packaging is to protect the drug from environmental influences, and at the same time to prevent harmful interaction with the packaging itself. The quality of pharmaceutical primary packaging is therefore described in relation to barrier properties, UV filter and hydrolitic resistance, and in many regions of the world is given a standard classification and mandatorily prescribed as an integral part of a drug.
