Vereeniging Steel Produces A Wide Variety Of Forged Products

Bundling A maximum of 10t can be handled at Klip works and a maximum of 42t can be handled at Steelforge. At the time of placing the order customers must specify the maximum bundle mass they can handle and the forgings will be bound in such a way as to be below the customers maximum handling capacity.

The customer must identify any other markings at the time of placing the order.

order number, size, quality, cast number and condition.

Marking All forgings are hard stamped on the ends of the bars with the following information:

For forgings up to 300mm the following ultrasonic testing standards exist: Commercial, Special and Critical. Critical testing can only be carried out on a machined forging.

Inspection All forgings are given a visual surface inspection as well as an ultrasonic internal inspection. MPI will be performed on request from the customer. Forgings in excess of 890mm diameter as well as all semis are not ultrasonically tested or guaranteed. Ultrasonic test certificates will be supplied if requested by the customer at the time of placing the order.

Note: Surface defects detected during visual or MPI testing less than or equal to 30mm in length will not be removed by means of grinding. Surface defects in excess of 30mm in length will be removed by means of grinding.

Surface grade Forgings supplied in the as-forged condition require a minimum surface removal to ensure that all detrimental surface defects are removed. The percentage surface removal is given below: 6% surface removal for all Press products.Item extra applies for machined surfaces.

Three cleanliness ratings are available depending on the production route ordered:

Microscopic cleanliness Normal electric arc-air melted steel

Metallurgical staff members monitor the complete steel manufacturing process and in addition, the departmental process records for up to three years are available if a complete history is required.Inspection operations are carried out at various intermediate stages of production to ensure a satisfactory end product. Final inspection by ultrasonic and magnetic crack detection is applied on request to all special purpose steels to ensure that the product is of the highest standard and suitable for its intended purpose.

Quality Assurance The chemical and metallurgical laboratories are equipped with spectrographic, microscopic and mechanical testing equipment.

Straightening Commercial straightening is carried out on most forgings with a tolerance as given below:

Hardened and tempered products include hardness sampling, mechanical testing and commercial straightening.

For quenching and tempering of forgings we have two facilities. One is a vertical process with a maximum length of 8 m and a maximum mass of 12 tons. A minimum of two forgings can be quenched and tempered at one time. The other is a horizontal process with a maximum length of 6 m and a maximum mass of 4 tons.

Thermal treatment All of the forgings produced are subject to a diffusion annealing cycle to remove the detrimental effects of hydrogen cracking in forgings at room temperature and over a long period of time. Other thermal treatments include: full and sub-critical annealing, normalising, spheroidising and stress relieving. All of these processes are carried out in horizontal furnaces. There is a length limitation of 10m on these products.

Boring mills (ring and disc type forgings)

Milling machines (squares and flat profiles)

Lathes (i.e. round profiles including taper and step forging)

Rough machining The forgings can be rough machined on the following machines:

3600 press Round forgings from  520mm up to 2000mm. Square forgings from 450mm up to 1500mm. Flat forgings, where the mass is in excess of 9200 Kg. Step forgings of the same dimensions as round forgings. Rings, disks and block are also forged.

2700 T press Round forgings from 385mm up to 890mm. Square forgings from 340mm up to 780mm. Flat forgings, where the mass is in excess of 7200 Kg. Step forgings of the same dimensions as round forgings. Rings, disks and block are also forged.

1600 T press Round forgings from 160 mm up to 415mm. Square forgings from 190mm up to 365mm. Flat forgings not able to be forged on GFM. Step forgings of the same dimensions as round forgings. Rings, discs and block are also forged. Semis from 450mm up to 600mm (for re-forging purposes)
