Type 304 steel originates from Type 302 steel. As advances in technology to lower the level of carbon which acts adversely to corrosion resistance were made, Type 304 steel was developed in order to improve corrosion resistance and weldability. The steel type is a representative of the austenitc series. In addition, continued development in decarburization technology has made the production of Type 304L steel possible.
