Multimedia Filter

IOTA  Multimedia  Filter contains  media with different  materials  and sizes in order to avoid hydraulic  stratification problem that could happen in single-media  filter. With single-media  filter, media  is hydraulically stratified by grain sizes, i.e. fine grains at top and large grain at bottom, after backwashing,  which opposes what is required for deep-bed filtration.

In multimedia filter, grain sizes are progressively  finer  and of greater density  from top to bottom of filter bed. When filter is backwashed, fine and heavy grains will sink  to the  bottom  while  large  and  light  grains  will be on the top. Therefore, undesired stratification can be reduced.
