高硅铝合金比其它铝合金具有更高的硬度和耐磨性，切削时，刀具交替切削较软的铝基和较硬的硅粒，硬质合金刀片易磨损，也易产生积屑瘤，影响粗糙度和加工精度。
为了避免积屑瘤和加工硬化，切削刃必须锋利，切削刃必须光滑，PCD刀具正好满足了这些要求。加工这样的材料需要高耐磨性的刀具，比如用PCD制成的刀具和刀片。

（1）PCD的硬度可达8000HV以上，是硬质合金的8～12倍。
（2）PCD的热导率高达700W/mk，是硬质合金的1.5～9倍，甚至高于PCBN和铜合金；
（3）PCD的摩擦系数和膨胀系数较小；
（4）PCD与有色金属和非金属材料之间的亲和力小；
（5）刃口锋利度及刀面粗糙度
