CNG cylinders are made to contain compressed high-pressure natural gas. The high- pressure gas exerts forces on the walls of the cylinders. To withstand these forces, cylinders are made of thick-walled, high-strength materials such as steel, aluminum or composites. Cylinders are made to withstand much higher pressures than the nonnal service pressure. For example, a new cylinder rated for service at 3600 psig is designed to withstand pressures in excess of 8100 psig. Regardless of this design potential, cylinders should never be pressurized above their maximum pressure (generally, 1.25 times service pressure).
