As for the O-ring used for reciprocating motion, its motion friction resistance is smaller than that of the lip seal, but its starting friction resistance is larger, usually 3-4 times the motion friction resistance. Pressure and compression have a great influence on motion friction. If the pressure is large and the compression is large, the friction will be large. The hardness of the O-ring and the surface roughness of the sliding surface also have a great influence on the starting friction, especially when it is left standing for a long time. Since the O-ring is in a state of considerable compression, the sealing material is embedded in the contact surface. The recesses in the O-ring produce slight physical and chemical fusion at the contact surface, resulting in increased starting friction. Therefore, the rougher the relative sliding surface of the O-ring, the longer the contact time, and the more materials embedded in the concave and convex surfaces, the greater the starting friction. The sealing characteristics of the O-shaped sealing device require that engineering and technical personnel engaged in mechanical design should understand and master its characteristics and basic rules in order to design the best sealing device. In order to reduce the starting friction resistance, the following measures can be taken: 1 .Choose materials with lower hardness to make O-rings. 2. Reduce the amount of compression. The minimum compression rate can be 3%-8%. In addition, the life of the O-ring is related to many factors such as the material of the relative sliding surface, processing accuracy, processing method, lubrication conditions and environmental pollution.
